Turning her back on the giddy world of fashion – Zeynep was previously Deputy store manager of Zara both in Turkey and the UK, an assistant brand manager at BNG, a fashion designer in Turkey and a former graduate of St. Martins, in Fashion Styling and Fashion Design and Marketing – phew!

Now, Zeynep is cutting her teeth at the sharp end of digital production.

Under the watchful eye of our unflappable Head of Production, Moe, Zeynep is already doing a great job working across motor sport, finance and FMCG projects, putting her well-trained sharp eye for detail to good use.

Not only will all of Zeynep’s experience come in handy with some of our more fashion orientated clients, she’s also got everyone at Suburb cueing up to be ’styled’, so if you see us sporting some unusual garms, you’ll know why.

NB: ‘Merhaba’ is Turkish for ‘Welcome’ – if you’d not already guessed.

Our summer campaign for FAB® has now kicked off. This summers campaign aims to boost brand engagement and sales of the nation’s number one ice lolly, FAB®.

For this years campaign we’ve redesigned a large portion of the microsite, as well as building on the success of 2010’s public voting features. New functionality includes a gallery of all the approved entries received, social sharing and voting.

For the first time, we are running the campaign in parallel on Facebook
and myfabland.com. We’ve built a single solution to enable us to achieve this.

The campaign has 4 phases;
Phase One – call for entries closes midnight July 24
Phase Two – Judging (shortlisting 15 finalists) July 25 – August 8
Phase Three – Public voting runs August 8 – 31
Phase Four – Winners are announced September 1

The campaign platform of the Design-A-FAB® Den competition encourages families to get creative and design a dream den makeover, with the three winning designs being made into a reality. The concept aims to increase engagement with the brand amongst its target audience, focusing on families.

Design-A-FAB® Den is being supported through a press advertorial campaign with key women’s media as well as our digital advertising campaign, PR and a dedicated social media programme (Finn Communications).

To promote the campaign further, FAB® has enlisted a number of high profile brand partners, in a bid to raise further awareness of the activity and incentivise competition entries.

Holiday park Haven, photography experts Snapfish and media partner AOL Parentdish will provide exclusive prize incentives and online support to extend the communications touch points of the campaign. Haven will be providing Design-A-FAB® Den templates at all of its 35 holiday parks across the UK as well as up to 50 per cent off a family holiday for each entrant. Snapfish will be providing other prize incentives including photo collage posters and photo books.

A couple of weeks ago I was invited by McCormack & Morrison to be one of the judges at their Day of Hack event. I’m always pleased to be invited to anything, and I love listening to other peoples ideas. So I graciously accepted and set off for west London, typically getting lost on the way. The brief given to the three groups, was to think of a “digital idea that helps our industry” and to present concepts, wireframes, scope, budget, timings and commercial models by the end of the day.

Not exactly a cake walk, right? Which is why I was so impressed by the quality of all three presentations. In every instance, the team had highlighted a genuine problem and tackled it in a considered and thoughtful way. If I was one of those mean spirited Dragon’s Den types, I would question the commercial models for them, but I’m not (thank the Lord). Beside’s, it’s a pretty tall order not only to come up with an idea, but to create a business model for it in a matter of hours. The last time I looked, there were some fairly high profile businesses that were struggling to present clear revenue models.

At the end of the day, the winning idea was the simplest one – LunchRunner, a mobile web app to make the lunch run easy. There’s a lot to be said for keeping things simple. Especially when you don’t have much time and there are some serious question marks regarding the intelligence of one of the judges.

Hack days and similar initiatives are brilliant. Getting people to work in mixed skill-set groups on an open brief can only benefit the agency. It democratises the whole concept of having ideas, which is often the preserve of an elite group – A model that needs shaking up a bit, in my opinion. The best ideas now need a combination of skills and knowledge that are rarely found in any one individual or defined role (even in a department full of them). The aim should be to create an environment where everyone has ideas, all the time, and not just on the days when they’re told to. That would be something which we would all benefit from.

Danny.

Instead of sending out Christmas cards, either paper or digital (eurghh), we decided to donate the money, we’d typically spend, to some worthy local charities. We shortlisted eight charities based around Southwark, and built a game that friends and clients (some of whom are also our friends) could play in order to help us determine which charity receives what from the pot of charity pounds. The result is the Wheel of Giving. Please give it a whirl.

We are pleased to welcome Suburb’s newest intern, Natàlia (never Nat, and do not forget the accent on the à).

Natàlia, joins us a recent graduate (2:1) from the Graphic Design degree course at Newcastle, as well as previously achieving the equivalent grade with a Spanish degree in Advertising. Natàlia is Catalan, so for those of you not sure what exactly that means, here is a helpful extract from wikipedia:

‘In The Road to Santiago, Walter Starkie summed up their (Catalans) national character with a local term seny (pronounced [ˈseɲ]) meaning common sense or a pragmatic attitude towards life.’ The full wiki article can be found here.

OK! So with that in mind – we’re excited to have Natàlia onboard, we’ve set her straight to work helping to develop the Suburb Christmas promo. Let the fun begin!

When you are so used to working in one language, it is easy to underestimate the complexities involved in working in another language. The opportunities are not always that readily available either. So when Coty Benelux asked us to produce a localised version of the miss-sporty.co.uk website for them into Dutch, we gladly accepted.

After several days of getting to grips with Dutch, several thousand words and an incredibly patient Dutch product manager, the new site has launched. The launch coincides with a major dutch campaign promoting the new ‘Ladies Night Lipgloss’.

We’re looking forward to building on the miss-sporty.nl site, making it as successful as the UK site.
